The Trust for Sustainable Living is raising funds to create a new exhibit for two Cuvier's dwarf caiman at the Living Rainforest Centre.

Two Cuvier's dwarf caiman are coming to the Living Rainforest!

This cheeky pair were confiscated from the pet trade and for the last 18 months have been living at a zoo in Birmingham.

They are growing fast and running out of space so The Living Rainforest have agreed to take over their care. Dwarf Cuvier’s caiman are relatively rare but available in the UK pet trade, they do not make good pets and many grow up in cramped conditions with poor lighting leading to metabolic bone disease.

We need to raise £15,000 to create a new exhibit for them. Can you help?

At The Living Rainforest we pride ourselves in providing our animals with naturalistic environments where they can exhibit natural behaviours and live a happy and healthy lifestyle. Before they arrive we need to build a new exhibit that will be suitable for them now and once they are fully grown.

These little caimans will reach 1.5m in length and weigh approximately 7–8kg.

Once settled in the caimans will be included in our highly acclaimed educational programme to promote sustainability and learn about rainforest adaptations. We have been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom award and have 25,000 school children visit the Rainforest annually.

Make a difference

Please donate to our caiman appeal to help us raise £15,000. This will enable us to create a fantastic new exhibit, and enhance our education programme.

How success will be measured

If the campaign is successful we will have been able to create a comfortable new home for these two engaging caimans.

    Preparing for the caimans' arrival

The animal department have been busy preparing for the arrival of the caiman. This week we took delivery of an unusual frozen food order consisting of baby mice and fish. This will be the main diet for the caiman, they will also be given live invertebrate food. The quarantine facilities have been completed and are now fitted out with all the required equipment. The caiman will be temporarily housed in quarantine while their enclosure is created. This will give the caiman and animal staff time to get to know one other, learn each other’s quirks and build trust between keeper and animal. We take animal husbandry very seriously at the Living Rainforest and strive to provide our animals with the best care possible.

    Team training begins!

Last week the animal team visited Crocodiles of the World, to get some world class, hands on training. Shaun Foggett, the Zoo Director and IUCN SSC Crocodile Specialist Group (CSG) Member, led the training. The team were shown how to safely approach, catch, handle and restrain a crocodile. They also discussed the enclosure design and feeding regimes. In the picture you can see our curator, Tina, practising her handling technique with a baby Tomistoma crocodile. When the caiman arrive at The Living Rainforest they will go into quarantine facilities before being moved into their new home. A massive thank you to everyone who has already donated to this appeal, we've still got a way to go, but it's great to see we're approaching the first £1000 milestone!

The Trust for Sustainable Living

Charity Reg No: 1085057

The Trust for Sustainable Living is a charity aiming to further the understanding of sustainable living through high-quality education. TSL wants the next generation to be inspired to imagine, and equipped to achieve, a sustainable future. The Living Rainforest glasshouses help to achieve this vision by providing a unique, sensory and immersive experience for 100,000 visitors each year (including 26,000 children attending on school visits). The Living Rainforest gives visitors the chance to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a lush tropical rainforest environment – and to explore how plants, animals, human needs, economies and cultures are all linked. The centre is home to over 700 plants and animals including rare and endangered species of global conservation value. Our education programme includes; • National Curriculum based school visits, with a choice of four guided tours; ‘Sustainable Futures’, ‘Amazing Adaptations’ and ‘Edible Forests’. • The International Schools Essay Competition and Debate involving over 1,700 school children and Teacher Champions in 65 countries. • The Schools Sustainability challenge. In this initiative schools from around the world are invited to submit short videos to showcase their best sustainability related project.
