Helping Rhinos is raising money to care for newly orphaned Mpilo at the Zululand Rhino Orphanage.

Ncengimpilo, or Mpilo for short, is the newest arrival at the Zululand Rhino Orphanage and was rescued in April 2018 after his mother was killed by poachers.

Mpilo was found still standing next to his mother's dead body and was in desperate need of food and water. The vet and rescue team got to work and after carrying out initial health checks, Mpilo was transferred to the orphanage where he will receive the expert care he needs until he can one day be released back into the wild.

Understandably disorientated, Mpilo was regularly heard calling for his Mum but thanks to the dedicated carers looking after him, he has now settled down and is starting to feed and even play.

Ncengimpilo means 'the one who fights for life' in Zulu and his name was chosen by the communities surrounding the orphanage.

There are only around twenty thousand white rhinos like Mpilo left in the wild so every one is incredibly precious and the UK charity Helping Rhinos is raising money for the Zululand Rhino Orphanage to care for him. Raising a rhino by hand is a long and expensive process, Mpilo is about ten months old and young rhinos are not fully weaned until eighteen months and stay with their mothers until they are two or three.

Any contribution you can make towards caring for Mpilo will make a real difference to the dedicated team of carers at the Orphanage and will help to ensure that, one day, he can be returned to the wild to breed and contribute to the survival of these beautiful animals.

Make a difference

The money we raise will help to cover the cost of food, milk and medicine for Mpilo as well as the overheads associated with his care and rehabilitation.

How success will be measured

The aim of this campaign is to ensure that Mpilo is reared successfully and ultimately released into the wild.

Helping Rhinos

Charity Reg No: 1155309

Shockingly there are less than 28,000 rhinos surviving in the wild today; the populations of some of the five remaining rhino species have become so low that it is feared they may soon pass the ‘point of no return’. 90% of Africa’s black rhinos have been lost to increased poaching, human encroachment and habitat destruction in the last 40 years - fewer than 4,800 remain. There are only three northern white rhino left on the planet and without scientific intervention, it is only a matter of time before they become extinct. Helping Rhinos is determined to reverse this catastrophic decline. Our strategic aims are as follows: 1. Rescue – support the life-saving work of veterinary specialists and rhino orphanages that are helping to nurture and return traumatised and injured young rhino back into the wild. 2. Protect – counter the threat of poaching by providing increased and effective security to rhino habitats. Secure the long-term conservation and protection of rhino by establishing specially designated Wildlife Conservation Sites – wild landscapes carefully managed and protected in perpetuity. 3. Educate – engage with local communities and schools and develop educational programmes that stigmatises the use of rhino horn and promotes wildlife conservation as an imperative for the planet. With your help we can truly make a difference and protect rhino for future generations to enjoy and marvel at.
