Watch Becky, Community Wildlife Officer, explain how the Nature Memories Café became a lifeline for people with dementia and their carers.

We need your help to keep our popular Nature Memories Cafe open to help people living with dementia and their carers connect with nature.

The Nature Memories Café was set up in January 2017 by Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT). It provides a series of weekly, drop-in sessions for people living with dementia and their carers. Each week participants experience the relaxing power of nature combined with nature crafts, refreshments and social interaction. It has been an amazing success, with at least 20 people attending every week.  After a hugely successful 10 week trial we put out a plea for funding and thanks to some very generous individual donors have been successful in securing a large amount of funding to keep the cafe going. We're hoping to raise a little more so that we can keep the cafe running for the next 2 years, offering certainity to the people who come along and something new for future members.

Evidence suggests that people living with dementia benefit from having access to nature. Benefits include increased physical and emotional health, increased independence, and improved self-esteem through recovery of memory and attention. We have seen this first-hand. Jane, who attends each week with her husband told us "this is a lifeline for us, we're all in the same boat here, everyone understands" and Marie explains how her and her husband tried a number of different sessions but nothing seemed to work until this one "It's lovely because it's not just a cafe, there's more to it and there's a nicer environment to relax in...During this session his behaviour is different, he's happier to sit for a long time". For many it sparks memories of time spent in nature, participants reguarly tell us about wildlife in their gardens too "I have crows in my garden that visit every day, I love feeding them and seeing what they bring in to the garden. It's so nice to be that close to nature."

We need to continue running the Nature Memories Café and to help more people living with dementia. With the funds donated BBOWT will be able to continue with our weekly sessions run by staff and volunteers.

  •  £10 would fund one place for someone living with dementia
  • £30 would fund all the equipment needed to run one session
  • £50 would pay for staff time at one session
  • £100 would pay for the room and all materials for one session
  • £210 would pay for all the staff, supplies and the space needed to open for one day
  • £1040 would pay for the Nature Memories Cafe to be open for 4 weeks

The money raised will pay for: nature-based crafts and activities including walks, talks and wildlife watching as well as refreshments for participants, staff time and hire of the space used. Nature Memories Café attracts up to 20 people each week. We’d like to attract more people as we have capacity for up to 30 people.

Make a difference

We need money to keep Nature Memories Café open once a week. It costs £209.88 per session to run. With additional costs to help with management time and advertising we need £26, 440 to keep Nature Memories Café going for 2 years. We've been overwhelmed by the generosity of people who've supported Nature Memories Café. People really want to continue coming and we want to make it something we do regularly. For many of the people who attend, especially those caring for family members with dementia, it’s become a lifeline and is having a real impact on their well-being. Please give whatever you can to help people enjoy Nature Memories Café throughout the year. Thank you.

How success will be measured

By raising more funds people will be able to continue to enjoy Nature Memories Café for 2 years and enjoy the benefits to well-being that connecting with nature creates.
