We urgently need your help needed to build a safe shelter for stray and abandoned puppies and dogs in Zante

As Christmas approaches some people dream of buying a puppy for their family, some of rescuing a puppy after Christmas... at Zante Strays, we are desperate to create space for more and more abandoned (and sweet stray) dogs and puppies, who will die without help.

Our volunteers have recently rescued litters of up to 8 and 9 puppies, dumped to die in rubbish bins or high in the mountains, with heartbreaking regularity. On Zante island, Greece, we often find loyal family dogs shot, tied up away from home or dumped high in the mountains, when they need a trip to the vet.

Our foster homes over in Zante are overflowing... we just can't save any more dogs or keep our foster dogs healthy without more safe, dry accommodation. We have 230 dogs, fostered in 6 main foster homes... still we find puppies and dogs who will die without help. There is no government dog home, no RSPCA to help these gentle dogs. We are a tiny all-volunteer rescue, registered as a UK charity (1166760) with no funding... but we cannot walk away, whilst others do.

One of our loving foster mummies offered us her garden, which we raised funds to securely fence, so that a dozen puppies/mummies were safe and sheltered temporarily, in an old caravan. We now have 46 dogs there and the cold, wet Winter months are rapidly approaching. The dogs, especially puppies, desperately need a warm, dry shelter. We need your support to build a big 'doggy house', where dogs and tiny puppies can be safe, warm and dry as we provide veterinary treatment, sterilise and look for loving homes in UK, and Zante. We would be so grateful for any used dog beds/bedding, crates, toys or flea/worming treatments you have to spare.

Please be one of the people to notice and help these sweet strays. We hugely appreciate any help you can offer, no amount is too small to make a difference to a little life!

    Work in progress

Work is going well with the new shelter and we thought you might want to see some pictures. Although the permanent shelter won't be ready for a few weeks, thanks to all the, wonderful, generous people who donated to the campaign we were also able to build a temporary shelter for our strays over Christmas. We'll keep you updated as the work progresses and a very big thank you from us and all the waggy tails who are looking forward to their new home!

The shelter shell is up for Christmas

Thanks to the kind donations of people supporting this campaign, the team working on the shelter have been able to put up the enclosure fence and rough shell of the doggy house in time for Christmas!

We deliberated over whether to wait for the land to dry out after the flooding enough to continue with the rest of the concrete shelter floor, but we were keen to provide some form of shelter as soon as we could. So, the metal structure is in place to form a rough shelter, with the raised concrete floor of the shelter, the rubber insulation tiles and beds to follow.

The dogs were keen to watch and to 'help' by digging holes for the supporting metalwork to be sunk into. The dogs are safe to dig all they like though, since metal mesh has been sunk into the play area floor closest to the fencing.

As a rescue, we are used to having almost nothing and struggling to pay vet and food bills each month. We find it difficult to  ask for help. The support and kindness shown to the wonderful, friendly strays of Zante island, Greece, by compassionate and generous people from as far away as the USA has moved us deeply. We can now keep safe stray pups and dogs we couldn't otherwise save. Thank you, from our hearts...

Zante Strays

Charity Reg No: 1166760

Zante Strays is a no kill animal rescue charity which finds great homes for the special Zakynthian stray animals in the UK. We rescue and treat abandoned, sick and injured animals, together with whole litters of puppies and kittens who are commonly dumped in the litter bins of Zante soon after birth. Poisoning of the streets/public and private areas is common in Zante, to kill dogs and cats rather than manageing the population through spaying and neutering. We fundraise to feed these lovely, friendly animals and to give complex and routine veterinary care to treat these vulnerable creatures in foster in Zante, until they are ready to seek their forever homes. Zante Strays commit to keep every stray dog/cat we foster for the rest of its life if it does not find a home or is old, blind or disabled. We educate encouraging neutering of all pet animals and offer half price sterilisation of owned animals to try to hit the problem at source for those animals who just cannot afford it. We have a small group of active volunteers based in Zante who use their own resources without funding from any government sources. This teamed with a small group of volunteers based throughout the UK are responsible for organising foster for strays and the adoption of rehoming animals. This includes arranging appropriate and safe transport to the UK, all veterinary checks, sterilisation, issue of pet passport and microchipping. We are determined to make a difference and as we have no overheads and pay no salaries (all services are given free by volunteers) we are able to ensure every penny raised goes to all of the animals in our care
